Heat Exchanger Pressure Relief

This Process Industries Division Event has been organised by the Process Industries Division Centres in the North West and Yorkshire Regions. John Whitaker will provide an overview of the various types of heat exchangers that are seen in industry and go on to discuss a structured approach to identifying potential causes of overpressure in these units - for example fire, heat transfer into a closed system, and interstream leakage. He will review the options for design of pressure relief for heat exchangers once the relevant overpressure causes have been identified. He will include some case studies from industry. He will also provide some background on the standards and guidelines that should be referred to when carrying out this type of work, with particular reference to guidance on fast transient overpressure events that can sometimes occur in tube failure events. Speakers John Whitaker CEng, MIChemE Senior Process Engineer ABB John is a Chartered Chemical Engineer and member of the IChemE. Engineering Professional with extensive experience in Process Engineering and project execution in the Energy and Chemicals Industries with a background in operations, design and consultancy activities. Currently employed as Senior Process Engineer in a Consultancy role with activity in the Energy, Pharmaceutical and Fine Chemicals sectors, amongst others, and with a particular expertise in pressure relief. Previous experience as a Project Technologist at a major UK petrochemical facility, and as Process Engineer for various EPC (Engineering, Procurement and Construction) companies in both the upstream and downstream Energy sectors. This included time spent supporting process operations on a number of offshore production platforms. Maurice Worthington MSc, CEng, FIMechE, MEI Eur Ing Maurice Worthington Murice is a Chartered Mechanical Engineer, a Fellow of the Institution of Mechanical Engineers and a Member of the Energy Institute. Engineering Professional with experience in Project, Mechanical and Process Engineering in the Pharmaceutical, Process and Energy Industries. Previously employed as a Project Manager for an Engineering Design & Consultancy Company with assignments covering project engineering and validation work for pharmaceutical industry clients. Employed by a major United States pharmaceutical manufacturer as a Lead Project Engineer, and Head of Engineering. Engineer at a Major Petrochemical Company for plant shutdowns, management of mechanical maintenance and inspection activities. Member of the Pharmaceutical TAC of the Process Industries Division Vice Chair of the IMechE North West Centre Process Industries Division
